A Room With A Better View

better-view.jpgMinimal window treatments with maximum style seem to be a theme this year. I posted about one approach recently. The very stylish (and ultra-observant) DIY Maven found this approach… and, she’s got a few DIY thoughts about it…

The blind is part of SAUMA , a traveling exhibition created by the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York. Artist Elina Aalto designed the Better View Blinds which are described thus,

“Better View is a series of perforated black out roller blinds designed by Elina Aalto. Light seeps in through the small cut out holes creating an image of a city by night. The cut-outs represent the light in the windows of apartment buildings and office complexes in the city. With the Better View blind any dreary view can be turned into an attractive cityscape. The series currently includes views from Helsinki and Tokyo. New additions portraying Stockholm and Paris are in progress. The images represent a selection of cities that Elina has traveled to in the last few years and the photographs are by her. The chosen views are of contrasting cityscapes: skyscrapers in Tokyo, 60s modernism in Helsinki and 19th century architecture in Paris.”

19th century architecture in Paris? Sounds like the stuff dreams are made of…

    Wow, I like this!

I’m just doing some research for our own blog on personalising of window blinds.

I have to say that turning blinds into artwork is definitely a trend that people are starting to buy into – especially when it comes to making the most of a window “with no view” as you say in your earlier article.

Some of our more forward thinking clients are starting to go for digital printing of photos and their own designs on blinds – and as you can imagine theirs a real mixed bag of subject matter and styles.

However, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it taken to this level before with cut outs etc. It looks brilliant.

Love those blinds! See branding potential for office designs, meaning designing blinds for offices, having the company logo, name, url or whatever.

I love the idea, I would love to sell the on my e-commerce window covering site. I think they would be a big hit. Want to start a side business?? Wonderful idea!
